The Restaurant Crags (originally named The Restaurant at the End of the Universe crags) hold a legendary status as the birth-place of sport climbing development in Waterval Boven. First bolted back in the early nineties, these crags put South African climbing on the map after being featured heavily in major international climbing publications like the German magazine Rotpunkt. If you have time to visit only one major area outside of Wonderland, it should absolutely be this one

The sector is celebrated for having some of the highest quality rock and cleanest climbing lines in Boven. [1, 3]

  • The Rock: It features highly striking, clean, gently leaning orange and red quartzite faces.
  • The Style: The movement relies heavily on technical vertical faces, crimpy endurance pumps, and thin footwork.
  • The Grades: Routes range from moderate warmups up to hard testpieces, but the crag is particularly famous for its spectacular concentration of classic lines in the (6b+ to 7a+) grade range.

Accessing the Restaurant Crags requires mindful parking etiquette, as the old Elandskrans resort access has shifted over the years.

  • Parking: The most common and safest place to park is at Tegwaan Country Getaway. The property owners kindly allow climbers to park for free—just drive straight toward the main houses, close the farm gates behind you, and use the designated "Parking" sign zone.
  • Permits: As with most central Boven crags, standard day permits apply and can be handled digitally via Tranquilitas Adventure Farm or through the MCSA.
