Less crowded and offering a distinctly alpine (country) feel, the climbing is characterised by a combination of excellent and sub par routes, often almost side by side, so chose wisely.
Often used as a stepping stone for climbers wanting to explore the country routes of the Cape Fold Mountains because the Apostles mimic much of the characteristics yet are still in close proximity to civilisation, and have excellent cellphone reception.
This allows you to hone your Alpine skills lilke
- off-trail approach and descent
- rarely climbed routes with few indicators of where to go
- feeling of remoteness
- genuine Alpine feel where a change in weather needs to be accounted for
Those are just some skills that make climbing on The Apostles significantly more adventurous than The Ledge.
But, equally, still largely contained and not as big a step as Climbing in DuToits Kloof, or other Cape Mountain ranges.

The climbing on The Twelve Apostles offers a real adventure within the relative safety of an urban environment. That said, it is remarkable how faraway from civilisation one can feel by the time you have tied-in. For this reason, it is not the best place to be learning to trad climb or multi-pitch - do that on The Lower Buttresses and Lions Head.
Venture to the Apostles once you feel ready to take the next step, having climbed a number of the classics on The Lower Buttresses, Lions Head and The Ledge. The climbing on The Apostles is adventurous - meaning that there is often no trail, very little evidence of previous parties, routefinding will be harder and retreat more risky. Your skills in navigation, route navigation, and mountain craft will grow or be tested!
It is well worth noting that many a party has taken longer than expected on a summer's day and suffered in the afternoon heat! Water is scarce/non existant.
