Several Boulder fields exist on the plains East of The Old Lodge, which is convenient for camping and parking. The rock is typical of the Escarpment Sandstone (Harrismith, Clarens et al) with variable quality. The Old Lodge is the nearest boulder field and the first explored for blocs. Five boulders and thirteen problems were opened in one day with 2 or three being very good problems on good solid rock. There are many, many more blocs.

Future exploration can expect similar results, if you love adventure and are prepared to explore looking for the gems, this is a good start.

The bases are excellent with short grass and flat, even landings. The rock is sedimentary Sandstone (from the Late Carboniferous) and softer than Cederberg Sandstone, be sure to test the features and have active spotters.

Approach

From the Old Lodge, head North East along the well-marked path toward the Arch. The bouldering starts on top of the first small ridges (left and right) and continues for a few hundred meters to the Arch Tarns.

Two different features on this boulder: A slab face characterised by a diagonal rightward-tending break and a beautiful, committing, slightly overhanging face on the left which offered the FA's two quality lines on good rock.
