The Wilds

The Wilds Bouldering is a unique outdoor climbing spot located within Johannesburg's Wilds Nature Reserve in Houghton. Set against natural quartzite rock formations, it offers a variety of bouldering problems just minutes from the city centre. Combining adventure, nature, and a strong climbing community, The Wilds is a popular destination for both experienced climbers and newcomers looking to enjoy outdoor bouldering in the heart of Johannesburg.

The main rock face is a small, overhanging quartzite wall with a south-westerly aspect. It typically receives morning sun, providing pleasant climbing conditions before becoming shaded later in the day.

In recent years, The Wilds Bouldering area has benefited from a true labour of love by members of the local climbing community. Access to the crag has been improved with clear directional signage, while selective clearing of nearby vegetation has helped open up the climbing area and improve accessibility. These ongoing efforts have made the venue more welcoming and enjoyable while preserving its natural character.
